Its beginnings date back to the 12th century, when Carthusian monks came from Provence and founded, under the protection of the Montsant mountain range, the first Carthusian monastery in the Iberian Peninsula. With the disentailment of Mendiz\u00e1bal in 1835, the monks fled and the splendorous Carthusian monastery was left in ruins, plundered by peasants tired of paying tithes and submission. At the height of its splendour it had 40,000 inhabitants, and has now been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. It was the capital of the province during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. This was the period of maximum splendour of the city of Tarraco, when the most important buildings of the city were built: the amphitheatre, the forum, the circus and its famous temple of Augustus, which served as an example for the rest of the cities of the Roman Empire.
